Vladimir The Medico is summoned to America as a visiting dignitary. In the large and complex Fortran Hospital, he delivers a lecture reminiscing about his early struggles in his homeland of Prague. At first, he is superficially impressed by the apparent freedom and opportunities in the “harmonious states of America”, and is pleased at all the fast friends he makes. But then an unexpected visitor in his hotel room reminds him of the darker secrets hidden in his past.
The tale is told as a series of multiple overlapping flashbacks from many viewpoints, creating an air of ambiguity; this is especially poignant as it becomes clear that perhaps none of the characters are telling the whole truth.
Another “digitally remastered” comic. This story was originally drawn in 1993-1994 and published as a small-press photocopied comic. It appears with improved scans and added halftones for this 2020 reprint addition.
